When a client gives you a budget, do you take it at face value?
Not Mark Goldsborough, president of Mitchell, Best & Goldsborough in Bethesda, MD. He knows that often clients are hesitant about discussing money so, after he confirms the budget they've given him, he asks, "I know we'll be able to do something wonderful within this budget. However, if we see an absolutely fantastic solution for this project - but it may mean a larger investment - would you like us to show you?"
Simply asking for permission tells the client that he's heard what they've told him, but also creates a sense of excitement. Then, everyone feels comfortable when Goldsborough presents design options that are over the original budget - designs that the client often buys!
