Typically, the design portion of a project is sold at a moderate price in order to pull the client into the company's system where the company pros can demonstrate expertise and top customer service. But the real profits are made from the construction of the project. Halsey Platt, owner of Walter H. B. Platt Builders & Cabinetmakers, Inc., increases his chances of capturing the lucrative construction portion by offering clients the opportunity to sign the construction contract early in the process and lock in a spot on the production schedule.
"Clients usually are in a hurry to begin," says Platt, "so often, if they can lock in their production spot, they do it! Our obligation then is to complete the design portion in time to meet our scheduling commitment.
"We meet this obligation by building the job binder as soon as the deposit agreement is signed. We immediately begin pushing the client to make selections and pick out finish material. Focusing on these details keeps the client enthusiastic, allows us to estimate accurately and helps us meet our production time slot."
