Embedding Culture

Theory:
Once you have a defined list of core values that you want to run the company by, the next step is to think of some ways you can "live" and "model" and "teach" those values on a day-to-day basis. The book, Organizational Culture and Leadership by Edgar H. Schein, includes a description of ways the leader can embed a culture throughout the company. Your employees will be looking for:

1. What you as leader pay attention to, measure, and control on a regular basis.

2. How you react to critical incidents and organizational crises.

3. The criteria by which you allocate scarce resources.

4. Your role modeling, teaching and coaching.

5. The criteria by which you allocate rewards and status.

6. The criteria by which you recruit, select, promote, retire, and excommunicate staff.

In other words, they want to see that you are "walking your talk." Otherwise the work on culture and values will be meaningless.

Ideas for Tactics to Exhibit Core Values Within a Company
(contributed by our Remodelers Executive Roundtables members)

1. Marketing should focus on attracting high performance people to your company - clients, subs, vendors and employees. High performance means not only skills and experience but cultural fit.

2. When interviewing a good employee prospect, speak 30% defining company culture and 70% interviewing and listening. Ask value-based questions like "What are the most important things in your life? Can you tell me more about that?" Or "What are some of the most important lessons you have learned? How did you learn these?"

3. After hiring, celebrate the new hire. Take them to lunch. Hold a one day welcome to the company using a buddy system.

4. Retaining your staff - Celebrate successes (performance and culture) within the company regularly and publicly. Write hand written notes with company paychecks. Get family members involved. At company gatherings thank the spouses.

5. Hold regular company forums to work on maturing the company culture.

6. Provide funding for a company Fun Committee focused on family and fellowship. Let them decide how the budget will be spent.

7. Encourage personnel through donations of time and money to become good community citizens.

And so much more........
