This Week's Tip!
Checklists: The Key to Doing It Right The First Time!Every time I fly, before we board, the pilot leaves the plane and walks around checking the condition of the exterior of the plane. The reason they do this is that it is part of the preflight checklist -- and 150 or so lives are depending on them to do things right! While there may not be lives at stake, the same principles apply to producing a remodeling project efficiently and profitably. No matter how many times we have framed a roof, installed trim, or built a foundation, a checklist is indispensable for doing the project right the first time, and for finding errors or omissions before they become real problems. A checklist for each phase of work, completed by the Lead Carpenter, will ensure that each part is correct before moving on. Each phase list should include a list of what needs to be prepared before the phase beings. It should also include a tool list that enables the Lead to ensure that they have everything they need without forgetting something small but important. And finally, list the expected outcomes or what will be inspected. You can buy lists that are started for you and simply add your special touches for your company. (Members of Remodelers Advantage can access forms like this in their Resource Library which contains more than 275 documents! Click here to learn more about membership benefits.) Here's the Checklist Tim uses for Interior Trim. This is one of many checklists that Tim has available. Click here to learn more about Field Training Services.
The first day will be led by remodeling production expert, Tim Faller, author of The Lead Carpenter Handbook and columnist for Remodeling magazine. Tim’s years of experience come to play as he works with company owners and production managers to fine tune their companies. His laid back style speaks to the production team and they can relate to his techniques easily because they know he’s been in the trenches, right where they are every day.
