This Week's Tip!
Community Service Builds More than just Good Will and Brand RecognitionThere are many benefits, both personal and professional, to volunteering in your community. Many remodelers think of the exposure that they may get. However, most don't consider the ways in which community service can help them build staff pride and a positive company culture. Greg Smith, founder of Greg Smith Company, a design/build remodeling firm in Virginia, volunteers regularly. For the past 9 years, he has used his expertise to help teenagers repair and improve homes for the less fortunate through his church's week-long summer work camp. He also volunteers at a local food bank twice a month. He has always encouraged his staff to be generous with their time as well. Greg has never wanted to leverage his personal service in marketing or advertising his company, but there are other ways that his company has benefited. In Greg's words: "When I recently won the Roger Gregory Award for Community Service and was written up in a local newspaper, our company's commitment to community service really hit home with our staff. They all seem to walk a little taller and take greater pride in working for the company." And yes, the unsolicited press exposure was good for business as well.
